Sounds crazy, right? Really its a bit like experts-exchange.com where a person asks a question and offers x points for the answer.

Would probably also require the use of a buy-it-now type of option or the seller could choose who the winner is (regardless of bid amount). In the latter case, the bid is not truly a bid, but an offer to be chosen. Shocked

As there is no notification about the winner so far the seller can choose a bid right now, too.
Right ?

Yes, the seller chooses who the winner is.

So, is this something that could be done with your auction?

Only if you're thinking in terms of a traditional auction. Think of it as a REVERSE auction.

For me it doesn't defeat anything - it is EXACTLY what I've been looking for, not to mention all the other people on phpbb.com asking for this type of thing.

You could say the same thing about the Buy-It-Now option, but it has turned out to be quite useful and very popular on ebay.

Makes more sense if you think in therms of: buyers need things, and want to find who will offer the best price for some service or product. This is very good for companies, and even for the government. I think this is the future for peoples buying on Internet, the buyers have the money, and find the best offer.
Elance is a very good example, but only for services. Can you imagine a place where you can buy everything for the best price? Where sellers offer products by the best price?

Submitting a bid in order to be paid - for a product or service - is commonplace at every level of economics EXCEPT the individual consumer level.

It could literally revolutionise the way products are bought and sold, and the reverse auction model is a perfect fit for it.

If anyone is available to hack this mod to create the reverse auction, please contact me with your rate/bid.

I fully agree - that is what a real "reverse" auction is for me - and that would be cool feature...

Let´s say you want to buy a new game: FIFA 2004 then you make a "reverse" auction.

Then one user say´s - you can buy mine for 100
A new user say´s Im willing to sell mine for 75
etc....so you "under bid" each other....

That would be a great feature...

..or a 3rd guy offers his in trade for your Madden 2004. ^^

Quite a few traditional gaming sites use this sort of a barter system, where the seller picks a winner. The key here is that the bidders are not bidding, they are making offers. The seller gets to pick which seller, if any, will win. Smile

I think this is an EXCELLENT idea.. it does however change the default functionality of phpbb-auction. This one would perhaps be better off as a mod. I am trying to picture a toggle in the acp for this, but I'm just not seeing it. Wink

Actually I can recall one site that used both, so perhaps it could be done.

All that is changing is that bids are decremented (instead of incremented) and lowest bid wins. Seems the most difficult part would be coding for the acp...

But sellers couldn't access informations about other sellers. The only one who see informations about sellers is the buyer, who will choose who wins. This is very important. They can see only other bid's values.

And some way to receive payment from sellers (for the use of the site) would be welcome, of course. Twisted Evil

Not knowing what the other sellers are bidding is what makes the auction competitive, which translates to the best price for the buyer.

I think sellers MUST see bids from other sellers, to offer more competitive prices. Only information that allows contact between the sellers must be hidden. Only the buyers can see that. At least a configuration key to enable/disable this functionality.

The process (in my opinion, of course) would be:
1 - The buyer register him self for free.
2 - The buyer create a "project", with the description of the product/service he is looking for, with details like: aproximated price, limit date, categories, pictures or optional files (like AutoCAD, Word or others), etc...
3 - The seller can view auctions briefs and bids, but can not place a bid, until registration. BUT for sellers registration, we (site administrators) must have the option to charge it (or not).
4 - Buyers are ONLY buyers and sellers are ONLY sellers, two completely different types of users.
