okay Now I have read this post.....

What are you trying to solve?

As I read it you want to execute auction_cron.php everytime auction.php is loaded - so you donĀ“t need to run auction_cron.php manually? Or?

Honestly, I haven't looked at it since they added the cron jobs. Basically, you need to either be able to set up the cron jobs on the server itself, or you can use that script to handle cron jobs without them being set up on the server.

I do not have the right to change the server!

Do you know a good free cron job script I can install on my webhost?

Nooooooooooooooooooooo!!! Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

Nico deleted it!! Shocked Sad

I think I will need it as well. My hosts are IDIOTS and if I can't do it myself, it takes them 3 weeks to figure it out. Crying or Very sad

If this is a bad script, we need to find a good one. Possibly fix this one. This is going to prevent a vast majority of hosted sites from using the phpbb-auction software!! Crying or Very sad

Hmm, well post both of them so that we can get some other people researching this. Wink

I am sure once everyone gets a chance to look at the problem, it can be solved. (knock on wood Wink )

Certainly this has come up in normal phpbb before. If nothing else perhaps we could enlist some help from phpbb or phpbb-hacks.

This is a crucial mod, in my mind. I've been able to sweet talk my host into letting me do some things on their server that they don't normally do, but there isn't a snowballs chance in hell that they are going to install a utility to allow me to control cron jobs. Sad

Even if they were willing, I have serious doubts that they would be capable of making such a change. Laughing

A service, very interesting. Hey FR do you have any spare IP's? I know they usually sell them in lots of 5-6 at a time. I was thinking that perhaps if you have a spare internet IP, you could set up a similar internet service for those who need it.

I would still like a script to take care of it, but good work frold, any solution is better than none! Very Happy Cool

Which one would we use to set up the cron job with that service? I've already gone ahead and tried the mail_digests.php script... that would be an awesome service if it works!

I don't know how to code this - could with some time - but one of you would be faster, I'm sure...

I opened auction/auction_header.php, found:
Code:
define('HEADER_INC', TRUE);

Added after:
Code:
include('auction_cron.' . $phpEx);

Ok - so that worked - it sent pm's to everybody. The problem, as I see it, is that it will do that every time you hit the auction header, right?

How about adding an auction field in the mysql area for cron_time?

You would need two variables - one that you set in the Auction ACP for how often you want to run it (drop-down list 15 minutes, 1 hour, 1 day) and a second one for the time comparison.

When auction header runs, it reads the time variable in the auction config files, comparing it to the current time plus how often to run. If current time is less, run auction_cron.php and THEN reset the time variable to current time plus how often to run.

In ACP:

cron_frequency (variable): How Often to Run Closing PM's/Emails: <drop-down>
cron_time (variable): Set to time + cron_frequency

In Auction Header:

Is cron_time < time?
No? Ignore auction_cron
Yes? Include auction_cron

If Running auction_cron:

Run program
End by updating cron_time to current time + cron_frequency

For emails, I think it's dangerous to run because you could cause it to be picked up as spam if too many went out, unless the auction_cron.php batches them somehow....?

I think another problem that could arise might be the same thing that happens when I try to mass pm my whole membership database (4500+) - it times out and I don't know how to fix that.

If anyone comes up with a work-around for the mass-pm or batch-email problems, that would be good here.
